The Council, in partnership with South Tyneside Homes, is bringing forward £2million worth of Decent Homes works originally scheduled for the next financial year.
The funding has become available due to savings the partners have made in this financial year through their efficient management of the Decent Homes programme.
And it means works to replace roofing, guttering and concrete canopies at hundreds of properties will get under way imminently.
Councillor Bill Brady, Lead Member Housing, said: "We recognise that providing decent homes for our families to live in is one of the most essential services we can offer and this investment will improve people's lives as well as their homes.
"We have always said that the Decent Homes programme is flexible and thanks to efficient management of the works we are delighted to be in a position to bring some elements forward.
"The changes to the roofing element of the programme will also enable us to make significant savings because we will carry out any other external works necessary - such as brickwork pointing - while the scaffolding for the existing roofing work is in place."
Dave Cutting Head of Asset Management for South Tyneside Homes added: "This is great news for hundreds of Council tenants. The efficiency savings we have made through economic and effective procurement mean that we are able to carry out these works much earlier than we first planned. We will be contacting tenants shortly with more information."
Roofing works have been brought forward for over 350 properties in Calf Close, Jarrow and in the Monkton Avenue, Winskell Road, Brownlow Road, Newmarket Walk and Marsden areas of South Shields.
Around 270 homes across the Borough will benefit from the removal and replacement of concrete gutters, while up to 300 concrete canopies will replaced in the Primrose and Scotch Estate areas.
Additional works to replace electric heating systems at 63 properties at various locations in the Borough with environmentally-friendly air source heat pumps have also been brought forward.
