Sheltered housing
Sheltered housing is aimed at helping older people, usually over 60, maintain their independence whilst providing low level support.
Residents have their own flat or bungalow and can be involved in the scheme as much or as little as they wish. In certain circumstances sheltered housing will be offered to disabled people under 60.
We have 36 schemes which make up approximately 1300 sheltered bungalows or flats.
What does sheltered housing offer?
- A Sheltered Housing Management Officer service
- 24 hour emergency call system
- Answer emergency calls and contact your family, doctor nurse or social services if necessary
- A daily call to make sure there are no problems
- Arrange social activities
- Some communal facilities like a tenants' lounge, laundry and social activities
Additional charges
There is an additional support charge for sheltered housing but if you are on a limited income you may be able to get help through a Supporting People Grant.
Ask at any of our local housing offices for more details.
Eligibility
Anyone can apply for sheltered housing accommodation, you do not have to be an existing council tenant.
In normal circumstances we only offer sheltered housing to applicants who are 60 years old or over. However, some disabled applicants under 60 years of age may be accepted for rehousing into sheltered housing if referred on medical grounds.
For sheltered housing with care accommodation, a referral will need to be made by a social worker or care manager.
Joint applications
If you are applying for sheltered housing as a couple, one partner must normally be over 60 years of age.
