Equality Framework for Local Government (EFLG)
The Equality Framework for Local Government helps us to improve our approach to equality and diversity in a planned and co-ordinated way.
It provides useful guidance on areas where we need to focus our attention and allows us to build our skills, experience and progress over time, moving from being an organisation that has a commitment to equality to an organisation that excels in this area. It focuses on what difference organisations have made and what outcomes they have achieved rather than the processes involved.
We have self-assessed as achieving level 2 of the old equality standard for local government and we are moving forward with this work. We have identified a number of targets and objectives aimed at removing any barriers that customers and employees face. We are ensuring that we deliver fair and equitable services and employment opportunities.
The five areas the framework focuses on are:
- Knowing your communities and equality mapping
- Place shaping, leadership, partnership and organisational commitment
- Community engagement and satisfaction
- Responsive services and customer care
- A modern and diverse workforce
The framework uses a broad definition for equality and reflects both the newer "place shaping" role that government organisations now have, and the importance of partnership working.
We will undertake an external assessment and aim to attain the achieving level of the framework by the end of March 2011. The equality framework for local government contributes towards our aim of delivering great services to our customers.
