Neighbourhood nuisance and anti-social behaviour

What is anti-social behaviour?

Anti-social behaviour means acting in a way that causes, or is likely to cause, alarm, harassment or distress to one or more people. This includes members of your household, neighbours and any visitors to the estate.

Your rights

You have the right to enjoy living in your home. We believe that each tenant has the right to live in an environment free from intimidation and antisocial behaviour. This means that we will investigate any complaints made by or against tenants and will take action that is appropriate to how serious the behaviour is. This is not a guarantee that we will or can take legal action in every case.

Your responsibilities

You are responsible for the behaviour of everyone, including children, living in or visiting your home. You are responsible for them in your home, in shared areas and in the locality of your home.

  • Do anything which causes nuisance, annoyance, offence, distress or alarm to other tenants or their family, lodgers or visitors; or
  • Damage or threaten to damage any property, fixtures or fittings belonging to us or to our tenants and their families; or
  • Use or allow your home to be used for illegal or immoral acts.

If your behaviour causes nuisance or harassment to your neighbours, you will be breaking the conditions of your tenancy agreement and you will risk losing your home. We will also take action against you if nuisance or harassment is caused by members of your household or your visitors.

South Tyneside Homes has a newly established Tenancy Enforcement Team to deal with low level tenancy enforcement issues. Customers suffering anti-social behaviour or neighbour disputes should still in the first instance contact their local Housing Office. An officer there will take all the details of your complaint and forward it to the appropriate Tenancy Enforcement Officer who will contact the complainant to discuss the problem and agree a course of action to try to resolve the matter.

South Tyneside Homes will continue to work closely with the council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team, the Police and other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour in South Tyneside.

For more information contact the Tenancy Enforcement Team on 0191 423 4000.
