Am I allowed to keep a pet?

You can keep domestic pets such as dogs, cats, caged birds, fish or small mammals in your home. They must be well cared for and kept under proper control. You must get written permission from us before keeping any other animal. If your home has a shared entrance you must not keep cats or dogs (except for registered guide dogs or registered hearing dogs).

What do South Tyneside Homes do about nuisance pets?

We are determined to maintain a zero tolerance approach towards behaviour that impacts negatively on people or the environment. In addition to the clauses in the tenancy agreement, we can also use other powers to take action to deal with unacceptable behaviour. This includes the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Dog (Fouling of Land) Act 1996. We may fine people who persistently drop litter or allow their dog to foul in public areas. In such circumstances a fixed penalty notice can be served on an individual and if this is not paid, court action can be taken and a much greater financial penalty can be imposed. In the case of dropping litter, a successful prosecution could lead to a fine of up to £2500.

What can I do to stop my pet being a nuisance?

As the tenant, you are responsible for getting rid of any dog or other pet mess, and for making sure that your pets do not cause a nuisance by barking continuously or being aggressive. You are responsible for the behaviour of your pets at all times. If you have a pet, there are a few things you can do to stop it causing a nuisance.

  • Don’t let it foul public areas. This is unpleasant and can be a health risk, especially to small children.
  • If your pet fouls a public area, clean up after it (pet shops sell special scoops).
  • Don’t let your pet out without a responsible adult and keep your dog on a lead.
  • Keep your dog out of children’s play areas or dog-free zones.
  • Keep your pet under control at all times.
  • Do not allow your dog to bark continuously, it may do so if left alone for a long time.
  • By law, some dogs must wear a muzzle in public. Check with your vet, or the Dog Warden Service.
