What is a hate incident?

A hate incident is any incident, which is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by prejudice or hate.

This may include verbal abuse, physical abuse, offensive graffiti or damage to property.

People may experience hate incidents because of their gender, race, faith or belief, disability or sexual orientation.

Why report hate incidents?

  • To enable South Tyneside Homes to monitor where incidents are happening and take action.
  • We work with the Police, the Council and other agencies to do something about it.
  • If you do not report we will not know that there is a problem.

How can you report a hate incident?

You can report a racist incidence in confidence at local housing office.

If you are attacked or witness an attack that you believe to be motivated by hate please contact Northumbria Police on 999 if it is an emergency, or on 08456 043043.

If you are a victim of or witness to any hate incident but you do not want to report it to the Police you can also report it to South Tyneside Council on 427 7000 or at hateincidents@southtyneside.gov.uk

  • All incidents will be taken seriously.
  • The incident will be investigated and recorded.
  • You will be kept informed about progress.
  • No action will be taken without your consent.

Please note you can report the incident and request that no action is taken too.
