Money matters
Rent
We use the rent you pay to provide housing services such as repairs and maintenance, home improvements, grounds maintenance and housing management. Therefore, it’s really important that everyone pays their rent and that it is paid on time so that we can provide you with the best possible housing service.
How much rent should I pay?
When you sign your tenancy we will tell you how much your rent is, and when you start your tenancy we will give you a rent card which will show you the amount you should pay. We will send you a quarterly rent statement to let you know how much rent you have paid and how much you owe.
When is my rent due?
Your rent payment is due on Monday each week for the coming week. You must pay your rent as soon as your tenancy starts, even if you don’t move into your home straightaway. You can also pay your rent every two weeks or every month as long as you pay in advance.
For this financial year there will be no collections on weeks 17 and 18 (weeks commencing 27 July 2009 and 3 August 2009) and weeks 38 and 39 (Weeks commencing 21 December 2009 and 28 December 2009).
Housing benefit and other benefits
To find out if you are entitled to Housing and Council Tax Benefit you will need to complete the relevant form. You can pick up a claim form from your Local Housing Offices. Our staff will help you to complete your claim form in order to avoid delays which would result in arrears.
Please note that it is your responsibility to get a claim registered with the Housing Benefit Department. Any delay may result in a period where full rent is payable.
If you are a new claimant you can contact a dedicated telephone line 0191 424 4333 for assistance with making a new claim.
You can also get an estimate of the Housing Benefits you may be entitled to by using the online Benefits Calculator on southtyneside.info
