Sheltered housing
What is Sheltered housing?
Sheltered housing is aimed at helping older people, usually over 60, maintain their independence whilst providing low level support. Residents have their own flat or bungalow and can be involved in the scheme as much or as little as they wish. In certain circumstances sheltered housing will be offered to disabled people under 60.
We have 36 schemes which make up approximately 1300 sheltered bungalows or flats.
What does sheltered housing offer?
- A Scheme Manager service
- 24 hour emergency call system
- Answer emergency calls and contact your family, doctor nurse or social services if necessary
- A daily call to make sure there are no problems
- Arrange social activities
- Some communal facilities like a tenants’ lounge, laundry and social activities
What is a scheme manager?
A scheme manager is on hand during the day to offer support and assistance to people living within our sheltered housing schemes.
All flats and bungalows, within the scheme, are connected to the scheme manager’s office and the Warden Call system. This offers 24 hour cover 365 days per year by use of a pendant or emergency pull cord.
The Scheme Manager does not make doctor’s appointments, carry our personal tasks or shopping. However, if you need help with occaisional shopping or collection of prescriptions because of ill health, assistance will be offered.
Does sheltered housing cost extra?
There is an additional support charge for sheltered housing but if you are on a limited income you may be able to get help through a Supporting People Grant.
Ask at any of our Local Housing Office for more details.
Who can apply for sheltered housing?
Anyone can apply for sheltered housing accommodation, you do not have to be an existing council tenant. For sheltered housing with care accommodation, a referral will need to be made by a social worker or care manager.
In normal circumstances we only offer sheltered housing to applicants who are 60 years old or over. However, some disabled applicants under 60 years of age may be accepted for rehousing into sheltered housing if referred on medical grounds.
If you are applying for sheltered housing as a couple, one partner must normally be over 60 years of age.
