If you are having difficulty paying your rent

If you are having any difficulty paying your rent, contact us on 0300 123 6633.

We will assess your situation and get you the information, advice and support you need. 

We can help you by:

  • reducing or delaying rent payments
  • identifying if you qualify for additional benefits to increase your income
  • help you deal with any debts or household bills you are concerned about

Ways to pay your rent

You can pay your rent by:

  • Payment kiosks at Jarrow Town Hall and South Shields Town Hall
  • Direct Debit
  • Online
  • Phone
  • Standing order
  • Deductions from salary or superannuation if you are employed by South Tyneside Council
  • Direct from the Benefits Agency
  • Swipe-cards (PayPoint)

Rent free weeks

You will get 4 'rent free weeks' or 'non charge weeks' every year.

When your rent is due

Your rent payment is due on Monday each week for the coming week.

You can pay your rent every two weeks or every month as long as you pay in advance.

To see your account balance, go to your rent account.

It's important that everyone pays their rent and that it is paid on time so that we can provide you with the best possible housing services.

If you are a new tenant, you must pay your rent as soon as your tenancy starts, even if you don't move into your home straightaway.

If you are waiting for a Housing Benefit claim to be processed you still need to pay your water and sewerage charges.

If you are waiting for a Universal Credit payment, you will be advised on the expected payment.
